Brief History of Aikido
Aikido was created in Japan early in this century by Morihei Ueshiba. Considered to be the top martial artist in Japan in his time, he was also a spiritual leader and visionary. Through lifelong study of various martial arts such as Daito Ryu Aiki-jujutsu, Jo (short staff), Kenjutsu (sword), and diligent spiritual practice, Morihei (known as O-Sensei, which means “great teacher”) arrived at the synthesis of these arts and practice now known as Aikido. Though just over five feet tall, Morihei defeated all challengers. Morihei’s great enlightenment came as he realized that the true purpose of Budo (the martial arts) was to unite all people and to foster a spirit of protection of all living things.
Now Aikido has grown to the point that you can find it in almost every major city throughout the world. If you travel, you can usually find a place to practice wherever you go.
“I want considerate people to listen to the voice of Aikido. It is not for correcting others; it is for correcting your own mind. This is Aikido. This is the mission of Aikido and this should be your mission.”
O-Sensei
